The area was initially inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Pennacook and Abenaki who were later driven out by European settlers in the late 1600s. In 1741, the town of Goffstown was established as one of the first permanent settlements in the county followed by Amherst in 1760 and Bedford in 1773.
