History of Curry County, New Mexico
Curry County, New Mexico has a rich and vibrant history that dates back to the late 19th century. Located in the southeastern corner of the state, Curry County was created in 1909 from parts of Roosevelt and Quay Counties. The county was named after George Curry, who served as the Governor of New Mexico from 1907-1910.
In the early years of Curry County’s existence, it was primarily a farming community with a focus on ranching and livestock production. By 1910, there were 5,847 people living in the county and by 1920 that number had grown to 6,908 people. During this time period, several small towns began to spring up including Clovis, Texico, Farwell and Melrose. These towns served as hubs for local commerce and provided essential services such as banking, retail stores and medical care.
In 1917, Clovis became home to Camp Cody which was an Army training camp during World War I. The camp attracted thousands of soldiers from all over the United States who trained there before being shipped off to Europe for combat duty.
