History of Cayuga County, New York
Cayuga County is located in the Finger Lakes region of New York and is home to approximately 80,420 people according to the 2019 US Census. The area was originally occupied by the Cayuga Nation, part of the Iroquois Confederacy. In 1779, General John Sullivan and his troops marched through Cayuga County and destroyed many of the Native American villages and settlements.
In 1789, Cayuga County was officially formed as one of 12 original counties in New York State. The county seat was established in Auburn in 1805 which eventually became a hub for industry with several factories such as flour mills, breweries, and paper mills opening up throughout the 19th century.
In 1851, Auburn Prison opened its doors and became one of the most notorious prisons in America due to its harsh prison conditions. During this time period there were also several major events that occurred such as The Battle of Montezuma Swamp in 1861 which was part of the American Civil War. In 1876, a large fire destroyed much of downtown Auburn but it was quickly rebuilt afterwards.
