Bradley County is located in southeastern Tennessee and was founded in 1836. The county is named after Colonel Edward Bradley, a veteran of the War of 1812. It was originally part of Hamilton County and the first county seat was Charleston, which is now part of Cleveland.
The first settlers were mostly Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived in the early 1800s. They brought with them their own customs and beliefs which have been preserved to this day. The area was mainly rural until the late 19th century when the railroad came through and industry began to grow in the area.
During the Civil War, Bradley County sided with the Union although there were some Confederate sympathizers. The Battle of Chickamauga took place nearby and several military engagements occurred in the county during this time.
